Stephen Varanko III: Boston Celtics

As of this writing, the Celtics are now 34-10, ahead of the Raptors who are 29-12 to be #1 in the Atlantic Division.

In one of the most awaited games this season, the NBA London Showcase, the Celtics faced the 76ers in London and won 114-103. The Celtics trailed the 76ers in the first half but posted 37 points in the 3rd against the 76ers’ 22 points to come out ahead by 6 points by the fourth quarter. The 76ers blew a 20-point lead in the 2nd quarter 47-27. Once the Celtics found their rhythm, they were never the same—they bombarded the 76ers with threes and closed the game. It was spectacular and dramatic basketball by the best defensive team in the league right now.

Here are some key stats for the Celtics:

  • Kyrie Irving – 24 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1.19 steals per game
  • Jaylen Brown – 14.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.15 steals per game
  • Jayson Tatum – 13.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and .95 steals per game
  • Al Horford – 13.4 points, 7.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and .60 steals per game
  • Marcus Morris – 11.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and .55 steals per game
  • Marcus Smart – 9.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.31 steals per game
  • Terry Rozier – 9.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steals per game
  • Aron Baynes – 6 points, 5.3 rebounds, .9 assists, and .32 steals per game

As for the race for MVP, Kyrie’s name floats in the Top 3, 5, or 10, depending on who you talk to. Some fans point out that he needs to average at least 30 points a game to make a strong case, but with the Celtics overcoming and beating all expectations this season, it won’t be surprising if he wins. After all, there’s more to being crowned MVP than making baskets.

Aside from Kyrie, Jaylen Brown has also got fans talking. While he may have been overlooked in his rookie year due to his poor performance, this season marks a new beginning for him alongside Jayson Tatum. Together, they could prove to be the Celtics’ most powerful duo, with Brown handling defense and Tatum the offense. Brown provides every bit of the grit-and-grind the Celtics machine is known for and fans like myself are excited to see him grow into his prime. As for Tatum, there’s no argument he’ll soon be a superstar.

The long and short of this post is the Celtics have a bright future ahead of them! I suppose that means I’ll have a busy year myself, updating this page with all the fantastic news the Celtics are throwing our away. Got any questions for me, Stephen Varanko III? Leave me a comment!

Buckle up guys, we’re seeing multiple championships in the next five years.
