The greatest Orioles to ever play baseball

The greatest Orioles to ever play baseball

Stephen Varanko III. For almost 20 years, the Baltimore Orioles was American baseball’s gold standard. They won six pennants and two World Series. They averaged over a staggering 90 wins and led the league in wins in all of eight seasons. All these records have […]

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.: The duo of the future

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.: The duo of the future

Obviously, one of the main strengths of this current Celtic team is their youth. Barring any injuries or multiple-player trades, this team can play through the next 10 years as contenders. While Marcus Smart (arguably) is the team’s heart and soul, the core is comprised […]

Why Kemba Walker will be better for the Celtics than Kyrie Irving

Why Kemba Walker will be better for the Celtics than Kyrie Irving

Stephen Varanko III. A season later, and every Celtic fan (to put it mildly) found out that Kyrie Irving wasn’t really a good fit with the team. Not to take anything away from the all-star and NBA champion, Irving’s return led to a disappointing exit against the Milwaukee Bucks in the playoffs.

But fret not. The storm clouds have passed, and while many beloved Celtics were traded away (thank you Al Horford, Terry Rozier, and everyone else), the rebuilding process has started with a bang. Stephen Varanko III.

Just last month, the wildest free agency in NBA history took place. Superstars left their teams and joined other superstars in other teams. Gone are the days of super teams with three great players. The rebirth of the dynamic duos seems to be at hand.

Stephen Varanko III. Amid the chaos, Kyrie Irving expectedly left the organization to join Kevin Durant in Brooklyn, creating their own power partnership, and Danny Ainge successfully courted and signed the Charlotte Hornet’s prized PG, Kemba Walker.

Stephen Varanko III. It was Hornet management’s fault though – not committing to a max contract for the once-loyal Walker in hopes of snagging another superstar. This was a huge misstep and misgiving by Charlotte since Kemba is one of the top five point guards in the league. Given a stronger team, he may very well lead them deep into the playoffs. Well, Charlotte’s loss proved to be Boston’s incredibly hefty gain. Stephen Varanko III.

Kemba is very much like his predecessor Kyrie, in terms of basketball style, without the severe knee issues and the proverbial chip on the shoulder. Kemba has been known to explode in scoring and is ultra-clutch. He has one of the best handles in the league and is a dependable leader. But most of all, Kemba has stated in several interviews just how important it is for him to be part of such a storied franchise. That makes all the difference. Stephen Varanko III.

Celtic lore: How Larry Bird became Larry Legend

Stephen Varanko III. Today, if people dismissed what they knew of Larry Bird, they’d think he was just a tall, white fellow who looked like the president of a mattress company or car dealership chain. Basketball superstar might be the last thing people would think […]

3 Ravens That Surely Could Make The 2019 Pro-Bowl

3 Ravens That Surely Could Make The 2019 Pro-Bowl

Pro-Bowl 2019 is now open for voting for the fans! Each football fans has their own bet from Baltimore Ravens – but why don’t we check it out who will enter the Pro-Bowl 2019 based on statistics?

1. P Sam Koch

Koch has been a steady player for the Ravens for a long time now. He doesn’t get as much thankfulness from fans as different positions may.

Sam has been an important individual from the Ravens this year and has kept the Ravens in a few diversions, yet his details represent himself. He has definitely helped the Ravens flip the field this year when the offense has strived to get a lot of yards. He has hit the midpoint of 47.8 yards per punt, which puts him fourth among NFL punters and first in the AFC. Another key detail of Koch’s is that of his 38 punts, he’s brought down 19 of them within the 20-yard line.

Koch is outstanding amongst other punters in the group and has the right to demonstrate his gifts in the Pro Bowl this year.

2. DT Michael Pierce

Pierce presumably won’t show up on the detail sheet as much a similar number of his teammates, but don’t let that deceive you into assuming he isn’t having a fantastic season. As shown by Pro Football Focus, he is tied for fifth-best in the NFL right now with a 90.2 by and large survey. That puts him around people like Geno Atkins, Fletcher Cox, and Aaron Donald.

Considering whatever is left of Baltimore’s guard hasn’t been so reliable, it makes Pierce’s work this season emerge. Where each other safeguard on the group has had flashes of terrible play, he has been in any event better than expected in each game in this season.

Pierce is completely helpful in the Ravens and he is still simply making his impression.

3. WR John Brown

With the kind of season he’s having, Brown could be the Comeback Player of the Year for 2018. Brown has a record of 34 passes for 601 yards and 4 touchdowns. With Baltimore’s current standing, it is pretty excellent.

He currently ranked sixth in medium yards-per-completion. It might not have drawn attention too much but for NFL but it is enough for him to be in the run.

Stephen Varanko III on VMI’s Football and Basketball Program

Stephen Varanko III on VMI’s Football and Basketball Program

Will VMI’s Athletics Program Ever Be Great?

The Virginia Military Institute is known as the oldest state-supported military college in the country. Yet, for all the prestige cadets get once graduating from VMI, the college’s athletics program has remained wanting for the last few decades. Stephen Varanko III believes that a public senior military college like VMI has the means to compete with other Division I schools in the NCAA. The military college just has to want it.

VMI Football

With the rigorous training these cadets get (think military discipline), it’s not unreasonable to think it’s a rather tall order to ask them to commit to sports as well. Stephen Varanko III however imagines that the physically demanding training and environment at VMI can be advantageous to athletes. The Spartan-like training and lifestyle may translate to a better performance on the field or on the court.

“The college’s football program actually boasts of 7 Conference Championships,” says Stephen Varanko III. “Unfortunately, the last one was more than forty years ago, back in 1977. At the very least, VMI retains some of its fun rivalry against Virginia Tech.”

Indeed, before Tech was pitted against the University of Virginia, the rivalry to watch even if you weren’t a fan of either teams was the one between VMI and Tech. Stephen Varanko III shares that the rivalry was so popular it was dubbed “The Military Classic of the South” and “Biggest Day of the Year in Virginia.” It reportedly even made the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1959.

While the glory of those days is long gone, Stephen Varanko III shares that VMI has a new primary rivalry in the Citadel Bulldogs. The two teams have met a total of 73 times, where the Bulldogs lead the Keydets 41-30-2.

VMI Basketball

Regrettably, when it comes to basketball, things aren’t much different. The Keydets men’s basketball team’s best showing in history goes way back to 1976-1977.

“In 1976, the Keydets made it all the way to the regional finals of the NCAA,” shares Stephen Varanko III. “They faced Rutgers University. Unfortunately, the team fell short, losing 75-91 in the finals. Still, it was enough to get the college excited about something, and it was sports!”

The year after, in 1977, VMI had another relatively successful run. The Keydets made it all the way to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA. They finished with 26 wins and 4 losses. The team had Ron Carter, one of three players who had their basketball jerseys retired by the college. The other two are Gay Elmore and Reggie Williams.

“I really do find it unfortunate that the college has yet to produce an athlete that could make a name in the major leagues,” says Stephen Varanko III. “The most recent player to have had a successful major league campaign was Reggie Williams. But the farthest he ever got was the D-League.”

Right now, the things aren’t looking so great for the Keydets. They rank 7th in the Southern Standings, with a record of 5-9.
